Mike Mendez
Head Coach
Mike’s coaching career began as the manager for IUPUI as they were transitioning to Division 1 status. “Spending 4 years in all the coach’s meetings, film room and organizing road meals really prepared me for the sports work and the world of this profession.”
His first paid coaching position was at Father Thomas Scecina Memorial where he guided two different freshman teams to the City Championship game as well as was on the varsity staff in 2003 when those players won a sectional championship.
He then moved on to his first Varsity coaching position as the Boys and Girls Cross Country coach at the International School of Indiana and in the same season assisted the Boys and Girls Basketball teams.
During that spring He was named to his first Varsity Softball Position at T.C. Howe and followed that with a 10 year stint (2x) at Arsenal Tech. Coach Mendez just previously resigned as the Head Coach at Purdue Polytechnic softball.
At Tech he was an assistant for both boys and girls basketball. “Coaching in sectional 10 was a brutal baptism into the competitive IHSAA world as many State Champions and Indiana All-Stars competed in this sectional”
Mike has Been the Girls Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Emmerich Manual as well as the Athletic Director and Boys Head Coach at Christel House during their transition into the IHSAA.
Married to Rachel (Andrews)’88, Mike has 4 Children Sarah (North Montgomery ’11, Ian Decatur Central “13, Kellianne (SMHS)’19 and David (SMHS) ’24.
He has Coached several Successful youth and development programs through the many years of mastering his craft including AAU, CYO and Indy Tigers.
For the past several seasons he had spent another tour of Duty with the Crusaders in the Capacity of Assistant Coach first with the boys and the past few seasons as Varsity Assistant with the girls. “My love for Scecina and my Passion for basketball is what I hope to exude to our players and community.”
Mike and Rachel are Our lady of Lourdes parishioners who attend masses At St. Philip Neri.

Scecina is proud to be named after Father Thomas Scecina, a courageous priest and WWII military chaplain who gave his life in service to others. His legacy of faith and sacrifice continues to inspire our mission today.
